Introduction

Wanderlog

Wanderlog is an all-in-one travel planning platform that empowers users to efficiently research destinations, build comprehensive itineraries, and seamlessly manage bookings across all devices. The app facilitates everything from discovering premium attractions to enabling real-time collaboration with travel companions.

Problem

Visiting the same city again and searching for the same places, AGAIN

Wanderlog currently lacks functionality for users to designate places in their itineraries as 'visited' or 'not visited.' While this limitation minimally impacts one-time travelers, it creates significant friction for repeat visitors to destinations. This gap in functionality prevents users from efficiently tracking their experiences and seamlessly incorporating missed attractions into future trip planning.

User Feedback

"…I don't want to remove things from my itinerary by moving them into "completed" sections – that ruins the whole point of the Wanderlog…"

“Able to "check off" visited spot on the list, maybe lower the opacity in map view. What I did was just delete items from my list, which is not ideal, but I need to declutter the map view”

“I'd love to see this feature. We have lists of places we want to see saved as WL trips, and would like to check them off as we finish them.”

This feedback highlights users' desire to maintain comprehensive travel records while clearly distinguishing between completed and pending experiences.

Design

Intuitive Status Indicators with Seamless Modification

Designed a proactive recommendation system that intelligently identifies when users are planning trips to previously visited destinations. The interface then offers a streamlined process to import relevant locations they missed during previous visits, significantly reducing manual effort and enhancing the planning experience.

Changing Place Status

Implemented an appropriate status system with thoughtfully selected visual indicators: green for 'Visited,' blue for 'Return,' and no label for unvisited locations. This design decision deliberately avoids negative connotations while providing clear status differentiation.

Accessible Import Option via Trip Settings

For added flexibility, the feature is seamlessly integrated into the trip settings menu, ensuring users can access this functionality at any point in their planning process.

Components

Components

Developed a cohesive component system that maintains consistency with Wanderlog's existing design language while introducing new functionality. Each element was carefully crafted to support scalability and accessibility requirements.

Bonus Outcome

Refined menu

Through this feature implementation, I identified opportunities to optimize the app's navigation patterns. The refined menu structure improves information architecture and reduces the number of steps required to access key functionality, enhancing overall user efficiency.
